The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe gets its second iteration

The “Beast of the Green Hell” has evolved into a true Porsche 911 rival

The Mercedes-AMG GT name is synonymous all over the automotive world as it is the definition of a peak sports car from the folks at Affalterbach. So extreme was its first iteration that it was developed at the Nurburgring and Mercedes called it the “Beast of the Green Hell.” Well, the inaugural beast was put to rest in September, but the wait is now over as the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is here. Such is the evolution of the new 2+2 sports car that it has grown into a true rival against the Porsche 911.

Let’s start with the less extreme change, which is in the design, as it looks sleeker than before with smoother curves all over. In fact, this is familiar to the open-top AMG SL which is because it was developed together with it.

The main highlight of course is under the hood with the new GT being offered in the 55 and 63 variants. Both get a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine, pushing 476PS and 585PS respectively, echoing their SL counterparts. A nine-speed automatic gearbox helps send all that power to all four wheels via the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drivetrain. This is enough for a 0-100kmph in 3.9 seconds and 3.1 seconds with a top speed of 295kmph and 315kmph respectively.

As far as performance wizardry goes, the 2024 AMG GT Coupe gets plenty of it, including an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, rear-wheel steering, and a sports suspension with adaptive shock absorbers. There’s also active aerodynamics in play around the underbody, the air intake and the rear spoiler to aid downforce generation.

The good news doesn’t end there as Mercedes-Benz will be bringing the AMG GT Coupe to India as well, although we are yet to get a launch timeline for that. Nevertheless, if the AMG GT Coupe in its current guise is already a manic sports car, rivalling the Porsche 911 Turbo S, we can’t wait for what Mercedes-AMG has in store for the GT R model.
