On foreign soil is where we first got to experience Maruti Suzuki’s first ever EV, the e VITARA!

Despite the EV space in the country developing tremendously post COVID-19, Maruti Suzuki has been conspicuous by its absence from the space. And when the e VITARA broke cover we were all waiting with baited breath, because Maruti Suzuki launching its first ever EV is an occasion. And interestingly, before its India launch, we got to drive and experience the e VITARA in the first country it got exported to from India – the United Kingdom. As you would have read in my India review of the e VITARA on the previous pages, the e VITARA looks very appealing, though admittedly, I would have liked it to be slightly taller.

VITARA

The UK-spec car was similar to the Indian one, meaning we drove the front wheel drive version with a single electric motor, powered by a 61kWh battery. It impressed from the word go even in UK’s typical driving conditions – drab weather and wet roads – with its friendliness. It felt very welcoming and friendly, besides which throttle responses were smooth and acceleration very progressive. That said, it felt quick to accelerate and impressed with its performance, as claimed 0-100kmph time is just 8.7 seconds, while also feeling closer to ICE-powered cars in terms of its power delivery. Handling was very impressive too, as the 2,700mm wheelbase and wide track help the e VITARA stay planted, be it at highway speeds or when going fast around corners.

VITARA

The suspension setup feels firm, helping the e VITARA offer a very European feel. And that means the ride quality is firm but not harsh, but at the same time handling is very confident and sporty, as you would expect of a Maruti Suzuki. Overall, while pricing is key, expect the e VITARA to do well in a market that’s looking for value for money!
