The modern Indian automotive market has witnessed fierce competition among leading carmakers, each vying to introduce world-class models. Among the select few that have consistently graced Indian roads through multiple generations is the Toyota Camry. Introduced in 2002 as the 5th-generation model, the Camry has steadily evolved into its latest iteration. Fast forward to today, the all-new 9th-generation Camry Hybrid has just been launched, and after taking it for a spin in Bangalore, we returned feeling thoroughly impressed and relaxed.
Design: New-Age or Timelessly Elegant?
Over the years, the Camry has transformed from a conservative-looking sedan into a bold, sporty, and sophisticated offering. The 9th-generation model embraces Toyota’s ‘Hammerhead’ design language, creating a striking first impression. The sleek LED headlamp units with integrated DRLs evoke the sharp lighting signature of the Supra. The expansive lower grille, coupled with intricate honeycomb-like structures and neatly integrated fog lamps, adds to the aggressive demeanor. The sculpted bonnet and sharp bumper lines further enhance its dynamic stance.
The Camry’s side profile is just as captivating, emphasizing its nearly 5-meter length—the longest Camry yet. A prominent shoulder line and a tapering rear roof section create a coupe-like silhouette. The rear end features slim LED taillights, echoing the design cues seen in other Toyota models like the Hyryder. Adding a touch of exclusivity, the model we tested was the ‘Sprint Edition,’ a sportier variant exclusive to India. This edition includes matte black front and rear skirts, blacked-out mirrors, roof, and pillars for a dual-tone effect. The 18-inch wheels usually machined are finished entirely in black for this trim. Toyota’s bold step in introducing a sportier Camry variant is aimed at capturing the interest of younger buyers and new customers.
Interior: A Blend of Luxury and Practicality
Step inside, and the cabin exudes an air of premium sophistication. Toyota has paired its hallmark durable plastics with soft-touch materials, creating a space built to last. A standout feature is the 12.3-inch high-resolution digital infotainment and instrument cluster, elevating the tech quotient. The cabin’s Yellow Brown and black soft leather upholstery strikes a balance between uniqueness and comfort. Front seats, with 10-way adjustability, ventilation, and memory function for the driver, make long drives a pleasure. Rear passengers—the primary audience for this sedan—enjoy reclining seats, generous knee room, and a host of controls for audio, seat recline, sunshade, and climate settings, embedded in the armrest.
Performance: Power Meets Hybrid Efficiency
Don’t mistake the Camry’s relaxed demeanour for a lack of performance. The 2.5-litre Dynamic Force petrol engine delivers 187PS, while the 5th-generation hybrid system contributes an additional 136PS. Together, the system produces a robust 230PS with 221Nm of torque. Three driving modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport—offer varied power delivery, though the difference between modes is subtle.
The e-CVT ensures smooth drivability in urban settings and on highways, with a 10-speed sequential shift mode adding a touch of engagement. Acceleration, though not as thrilling as turbo-petrol Euro sedans, is commendable; the 0-100 km/h sprint takes a claimed 7.2 seconds. Efficiency is where the Camry truly shines, offering a segment-best 25.49 km/l (claimed). On our 80-km test route, which included highways, village roads, and ghat sections, the trip computer displayed an impressive 20 km/l.
The Camry retains its TNGA-K platform, shared with the Lexus ES 300h, but now feels more confident at higher speeds. While the steering isn’t as direct as its European rivals, it strikes a balance between engagement and long-distance comfort. The suspension is tuned to absorb undulations with ease, ensuring a plush ride for all occupants.
Features and Safety: Fully Loaded but Room for Improvement
The Camry Hybrid comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of features, including the much-needed ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). The safety suite includes a pre-collision system, radar-based cruise control, lane departure alert, and auto high-beam functionality. With 9 airbags as standard, safety is a priority. However, the 360-degree camera system—though functional—lags behind competitors in resolution and user interface quality.
Verdict: A Segment Standout
The 9th-generation Toyota Camry Hybrid is a marked improvement over its predecessor in every aspect. Priced at approximately ₹48 lakh (ex-showroom, India), it offers unmatched comfort, hybrid efficiency, and Lexus-like luxury at a more accessible price point. As one of the longest-running nameplates in Toyota’s Indian lineup, the Camry has consistently proven its mettle, and this generation is no exception. It’s an ideal choice for those seeking a D-segment sedan that combines performance, economy, and unparalleled comfort—a rare combination in today’s automotive landscape.
