The Nexus is the latest offering from Indian EV major Ampere EV. It sits in the premium family electric scooter segment and promises to be an all-rounder. It starts with the design which sticks to convention with clean lines and large panel areas. It gets clever aerodynamic aids where vents behind the front wheel channel air through the bodywork, cooling the battery and motor before exiting through vents below the tail lamp. It is available in four cool colours – Zanskar Aqua, Lunar White, Steel Grey and Indian Red.
The Nexus focuses on space with the 712mm long seat being one of the largest in the segment and one that’s accessible at 765mm. It has ample storage space with a lockable frunk and large boot space besides a large 235mm floorboard.
Besides the premium bodywork, exclusivity comes in the form of a diamond-cut headlamp with integrated DRLs, LED tail lamp and LED turn indicators. The higher ST variant gets a 7-inch colour TFT instrument console that can also be controlled via a handlebar-mounted premium switchgear. It also supports Bluetooth, BLE, WiFi connectivity and navigation via Ampere’s Nex.io technology.
It is powered by a 4kW mid-mounted electric motor that sends power to the rear wheel via a belt drive. The scooter has three riding modes – Eco, City and Power – besides Limp Home and reverse modes. Claimed top speed is 93kmph while the scooter offers sufficient grunt to climb a gradability of 16 degrees.
It gets a 3kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate battery that is said to be 1.3 times safer than conventional Lithium-ion battery packs while being denser as well. Coupled with the electric motor, the Ampere Nexus offers a claimed range of upto 136 kilometres and charging takes 3.3 hours.
The Ampere Nexus features a robust exoskeleton that claims to be four times stron
ger than its competitors. Suspension components include telescopic forks and dual shock absorbers that sit on a hybrid subframe. It also has 12-inch wheels besides a tall 170mm ground clearance that helps it navigate the most remote terrain. To demonstrate the Nexus’s robustness, the scooter was ridden 10,000 kilometres across India, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, earning it a place in the India Book of Records, besides three more records.
The Ampere Nexus is priced at an introductory1.1 lakh for the EX variant and 1.2 lakh for the ST variant (both prices ex-showroom). At these prices, the Ampere Nexus comes across as a sensible scooter that seamlessly straddles comfort, practicality, features, performance and range into one complete package.
