This is BMW Motorrad’s centenary year and it only makes sense to unveil the update of its most popular ADV, now christened as the R 1300 GS, thanks to the increase in the displacement of the boxer twin from 1,254cc to 1,300cc. That’s just one of the vast amounts of changes on the 2024 model, so let’s get into it.
Starting with the design, the asymmetrical headlamp on the previous model has been replaced with a centralised LED headlamp surrounded by X-shaped LED DRLs. The beak is now sharper and the turn indicators are now integrated into the handguards. At the sides, you get an all-new aluminium fuel tank. Overall, the motorcycle is more tightly packaged than before, thanks to the gearbox which is now placed under the engine for better mass centralisation.
On the features front, you get a 6.5-inch TFT instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity, tyre pressure monitoring, heated grips and dynamic cruise control. The optional Riding Aids adds radar sensors to enable features like Active Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Change Warning (SWW).
The 1,300cc liquid-cooled twin cylinder Boxer engine puts out 145PS and 149Nm, the highest-ever for a boxer engine produced in series. It gets larger bore (106.5mm from 102.5mm) and shorter stroke (73mm, down from 76mm). Apart from the higher peak torque, this has helped increase torque throughout the rev range. There are four ride modes on offer – Road, Rain, Eco and Enduro.
The chassis too has been heavily updated, it now sits on a new sheet metal shell frame made up of steel and a die-cast aluminium sub-frame, making the ADV lighter and stiffer. At the front you get Evo Telelever suspension while the rear suspension duties are handled by Evo Paralever. The optional Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) has been updated and can adjust the front and rear damping along with automatic adjustment for spring rate based on different loads and ride mode selected. Additionally, there’s a new adaptive vehicle height adjustment and sports suspension.
Apart from the Basic variant, the 2024 R 1300 GS will be on offer in three models – Triple Black, GS Trophy and Option 719 Tramuntana. The Option 719 Tramuntana sets itself apart with cross-spoke wheels finished in gold and boasts a premium Aurelius Green metallic paint finish.
The 2024 R 1300 GS has already been listed on the bikemaker’s India website, hinting towards an imminent launch. Once launched, it will lock horns against the Triumph Tiger 1200.
