Renault is all set to launch the hybrid variant of the Duster on October 17. This adds another powertrain option in the Duster lineup, accompanying the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine options. Called the E-Tech system, Renault reveals that it is derived from Formula 1.
The Duster hybrid powertrain consists of an Atkinson cycle-based 1.8-litre (1,789cc to be precise) naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, combined with two electric motors—a 49PS motor powering the wheels, and a 20PS integrated starter-generator. The combined output of the powertrain is estimated to be 162PS and 172Nm, supported by a 1.4kWh battery pack.
Renault has a different approach to the hybrid system, as compared to Toyota (and therefore, Suzuki systems). The E Tech system combines a petrol engine with electric drive and a battery, and power is sent through a clutchless multi-mode automatic gearbox. This gearbox, unlike the Japanese e-CVT systems, utilises fixed gear ratios and thus, the engine RPM is expected to rise and fall accordingly as the car is driven down the road.
The system is designed to work in different modes—dynamic hybrid (engine and motor working together), electric motion (motor-driven with the engine charging the battery), ICE-only drive and energy recovery during deceleration.
With the launch of the Duster hybrid, Renault most likely aims to make up for the lack of a diesel powertrain option. Pricing for the Duster hybrid is expected to be ₹19-23 lakh ex-showroom. Renault claims that the Duster hybrid is sold out even before the prices are out and the bookings are temporarily halted.
