The electric prototype covered over 1,200 kilometres on a single charge
Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX secured a new record demonstrating its engineering prowess in real-world conditions. The car was driven from Stuttgart to Silverstone and covered a distance of 1,202 kilometres in 14.5 hours of driving time at an average speed of 83kmph on a single charge!
The journey saw the EQXX cover Autobahn in Germany, Calais in Northern France, the M25 around London, and the Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix in Brackley to greet the technical experts from Formula 1 and Formula E who developed its advanced drivetrain. Nyck de Vries, who races for the Mercedes-EQ Formula E team, finally drove the car for 11 laps around Silverstone for the remaining amount of charge in the battery.
The first record was in April this year when the car munched a distance of 1,008kms from Stuttgart to Cassis on the French Mediterranean coast and had to face lower temperatures of 3 to 18 degrees celsius driving through the Alps and also had to face recuperation that generally Lithium-ion batteries do. The second and recent record was more towards driving the car in warmer spring temperatures and bearing the brunt of traffic congestion.
The complex drivetrain engineered by the technical team from Formula 1 and Formula E fared really well even in warmer temperatures. Thanks to the intelligent interaction of aero-shutters, coolant valves and pumps that ensures optimum working temperatures for the drivetrain. The vehicle floor has a cooling plate installed that enables airflow along its underbody for a low-cost, innovative cooling capability.
VISION EQXX - the future of road-going Mercedes-Benz electric cars boasts an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.17 and an electronically limited top speed of 140kmph. As for the battery, the operating voltage is 900V with an energy capacity of around 100kWh.
Joining the celebration at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed, the Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX will meet its peers from Mercedes-Benz’s past, present and future.
