The Hypercar class in the FIA World Endurance Championship has certainly been generating the buzz with big names such as Toyota, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Cadillac and Peugeot being involved. Now, Lamborghini has officially joined the fray by unveiling its first LMDh racing machine, the SC63. Lamborghini claims it’s the most advanced racing machine they’ve made and will also compete in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship Endurance Cup.
Considering it’s a race car let’s start by what it packs underneath the hood. It is a bespoke 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 engine running a ‘cold V’ configuration. Basically, the turbos sit outside the vee angle of the engine which is claimed to ease cooling and maintenance. This is paired with an electric battery which is an LMDh-standardised motor generator unit (MGU) and gearbox, which is restricted to a combined 680PS.
Lamborghini may have partnered with Ligier to develop and build the monocoque, the aerodynamics package is unlike any Lamborghini. The body is aggressive as a race car should be with the massive rear wing and vertical fin. There is however, a bit of Lamborghini personality after all with their signature Y-shaped lighting.
The Lamborghini SC23 will make its competition debut in 2024 with its factory lineup comprising Mirko Bortolotti and Andrea Caldarelli, as well as ex-F1 drivers Daniil Kvyat and Romain Grosjean. Sure, seeing it compete for real will take some time, but you’ll be able to see it in the flesh at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK which is happening this week.
