BMW has revealed its Skytop concept – an open two-seater roadster, having two seats and a semi-targa top roof style. The concept was showcased at Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza. Takes design inspiration from the historic BMW 503 and BMW Z8 (E52).
It is based on the carmaker 8 Series platform. The Skytop concept has a prominent sweeping hood, the iconic BMW shark-nose design with an illuminated kidney grille, and a sculpted flat surfaced rear section. It looks striking from the front with a central spine extending from the hood, through the interior, to an aluminium trim positioned on the trunk lid, emphasising the dynamic flow of the silhouette. The narrow LED lights give it a striking look and blend well into highly complex details of the concept car.
The rear seats are missing just like the 8 Series giving it a more compact look. It has a fully retractable rear window and two removable roof sections which are finished in pure leather that can be removed and placed into the luggage space. The reddish-brown leather seats add a touch of luxury while crystal applications artfully embedded within the interior rounds up the special cabin.
The concept sports the most powerful V8 produced by BMW. It is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 with M TwinPower Turbo Technology from the BMW M8 Competition and delivers 616.87PS and 750Nm altogether as the brand’s most powerful engine.
BMW’s chief designer adds that they’re not sure whether it will come into production. But if they intend, there will be only 50 units and the deliveries could commence within a year.
