The BMW 7 Series and i7 Protection are fortresses on wheels

The concept of armoured vehicles isn’t a new one as we’re not talking about a radical Humvee. We’re talking about regular cars that may look the part but have been amped up under the skin to make it a fortress on wheels. BMW has unveiled its latest creation in this department, the 7 Series and i7 Protection and they’ve left no stones unturned in armouring up their most luxurious sedans while keeping the opulence intact.

The changes start at the body where, thanks to things like armoured steel, bolstered structures and reinforced panels, the two sedans have Class VR9 protection and PAS 300 blast resistance. The glass itself has the highest protection level of civilian protection vehicles with a VPAM 10 classification. This is enough to resist fire from calibre 7.62×54 R ammunition.

Elsewhere, the fuel tank is self-sealing to minimise the risk of an explosion and there’s a bespoke set of 20-inch light alloy wheels. Michelin-sourced 255-740 R510 run-flat tyres coupled with run-flat rings allows driving at  speeds up to 80kmph even with a total loss of pressure. The carmaker is also offering optional add-ons in the form of a fresh-air supply system, a fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, and radio transceivers and flag poles (you can guess what kind of customers will be interested in that last option).

Powering the 7 Series Protection is a 530PS 4.4-litre V8 engine, enough for a 6.6-second 0-100kmph sprint, despite added weight from all the armour The i7 Protection on the other hand has a 544PS dual-motor electric powertrain to play with, taking 9 seconds to hit 100kmph from a standstill.

The best part about armouring up the 7 Series and i7 is that BMW hasn’t compromised on the opulence in the process. The curved display, heated and ventilated seats, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround sound system as well as the ambient lighting, have all been retained.

BMW will showcase the 7 Series and i7 Protection at the upcoming IAA Mobility 2023 International Motor Show in Munich, scheduled to run between September 5-10.
