The Swift has had an interesting couple of months since my last long term report. There were weeks when I was driving it to office everyday and even did a round trip to Mumbai in it, and then there were weeks when the car didn’t get driven at all as I was travelling!
That said, driving it in the city has had the Swift reaffirm its status as one of my favourite hatchbacks rather quickly. It’s a car that makes light of cutting through traffic with its responsive steering and eager power delivery, while also offering a good view from behind the wheel that offers lots of confidence in traffic, especially when I need to pass those pesky autorickshaw drivers.
In fact it’s a car that’s endeared itself to me for multiple reasons and one that I’ve regularly chosen to commute in, over the other long termers in the TURBOCHARGED fleet. Wireless Apple CarPlay adds to convenience, as I’ve realised on a couple of occasions when I forgot to carry my phone’s charging cable. But that also made me realise that the wireless charging pad in the Swift is rather slow.
I also drove the Swift to Mumbai and back, and came back surprised with its excellent efficiency as the car returned 23kmpl on that day! It also felt effortless on the highway, besides which the seats ensured I wasn’t tired despite driving for over 300km that day. I’ve not driven the car as much over the past few weeks, but admittedly, I am keen on spending more time driving it.

Maruti Suzuki launched the new-generation Swift a few months back and the Indian carmaker has launched a CNG variant of the hatchback. Here are the ex-showroom prices for the new Swift S-CNG:

  • VXi CNG: Rs 8.20 lakh
  • VXi (O) CNG: Rs 8.47 lakh
  • ZXi CNG: Rs 9.20 lakh

The Swift S-CNG shares its powerplant with the new-generation petrol-powered Swift. The all-new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder engine in CNG guise delivers 70PS and 102Nm (the Petrol version delivers 82PS and 112Nm). Maruti Suzuki claims that the Swift S-CNG offers a fuel efficiency of 32.85km/kg (Petrol Swift delivers 24.8kmpl in MT and 25.75kmpl in AMT variants). However, the Swift S-CNG’s engine only comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Swift S-CNG looks identical to the petrol-powered variants and other than the compromised boot space owing to the CNG cylinder, the interiors remain the same. The Swift S-CNG is the 14th CNG-powered offering in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio.
