Helmets are arguably the most important riding gear, irrespective of how fast or slow you ride, or where you ride, and save you from life-threatening injuries. Over the past few years, bikers in India have realised their importance, and access to world-class helmets in India means there is now a greater emphasis than ever before on wearing a helmet.

KYT Helmets has been quick to gain popularity globally with its strong R&D and in fact, leading MotoGP riders like Enea Bastianini (factory Ducati team currently) and a host of Moto2 and Moto3 riders use KYT helmets today. But in what was a first of its kind event, KYT launched its new flagship helmet in India, the KX-1 Race GP. The helmet was launched by Xavier Simeon, KYT ambassador and former MotoGP and Moto2 rider. Xavier has also been instrumental in testing and developing the KX-1 Race GP. The launch event was followed by a track day courtesy ISBK Racing, giving us an opportunity to test the helmet – at a MotoGP-grade circuit like the Buddh International Circuit! I tested the helmet astride a Ducati Monster, which being a naked motorcycle allowed me to experience the helmet’s aerodynamic abilities well.

The helmet looks like a MotoGP-spec helmet ought to, especially with the carbon finish. The sleek design, thoughtfully engineered inlets and exhaust vents and spoiler mean the helmet is perfect for high-speed riding. The Monster allowed me to clock over 240kmph down the 1.2km long back straight at the BIC where the helmet felt stable, also ensuring my neck was not strained. The KX-1 Race GP is also very light thanks to its tri-composite shell with carbon fibre and weighs just about 1,400gm, while boasting excellent build quality and fit-finish levels.

The visor and clip lock are top notch and the visor is thicker at the edges, and the thicker bottom edge helps ensure the spring-loaded clip-lock does not add undue stress onto it. The ‘clicks’ when opening or closing the visor or vents could have offered a better feel, but quality is top notch. The helmet tends to get noisy but is meant for using on track, with ear plugs, which takes care of the issue. There’s an air filter on the chin part inside, along with a provision for attaching a water-pipe for hydration packs.

The visor removal mechanism has metal parts making them durable, besides which the KX-1 lets you take the visor off with a single click on each side, making it ultra-quick. The padding is firm but comfortable and the fit snug, typical of a race helmet. Most importantly, the field of view is really large, making it easy to look ahead even when crouched. The KX-1 is FIM homologated meaning it complies with the highest safety standards globally and KYT India has also ensured it meet ISI standards, making it the only race helmet in India to do so. Priced at Rs 55,000 for solid colours and Rs 57,000 for the carbon or graphic versions, the KX-1 Race GP is a steal at its price!
