The post Nissan Dispels Rumours of Exiting the Indian Market first appeared on Turbocharged.

]]>
Amidst rumours surfacing of Japanese giant Nissan exiting the Indian market, which has been a key player since 2005, the company came forward and issued a statement that there are absolutely no plans to exit the Indian market. We recently covered in-depth, the marque’s global turnaround plans post the stepping down of the erstwhile CEO Makoto Uchida, who has been replaced by Ivan Espinosa. On the same trip, we drove the Nissan Z, the Nissan Qashqai, and the Nissan Note Aura e-POWER, the last being a series hybrid a.k.a a range-extender electric vehicle, do check out these reviews as some of these cars may even make it to India, at least in limited numbers.

As recently as in March 2025, Nissan teased a pair of new cars for the Indian market—an MPV and an SUV. The MPV will be a three-row model, while the SUV is expected to be a midsize SUV, sitting a segment above the popular Nissan Magnite. Speaking of the Nissan Magnite, it received a major update just last year, thoroughly revamping the interior and the features list to bring it in line with contemporary consumer demands. Nissan also plans to introduce a different C-Segment SUV in the near future.

Nissan India also reiterated its plans to turn India into an export hub for other countries, something multiple manufacturers have done successfully so far. On March 31, 2025, it was announced that the Renault Group would own 100 percent of Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL), by acquiring 51 percent of the shares currently being held by Nissan. In the same release, it was also revealed that Renault’s super-popular Twingo will get a Nissan-reengineered version though there’s little chance of that making it to the Indian market.

Even if we don’t get the Nissan version of the Renault Twingo, we are going to get a B-MPV and two C-SUVs which will increase Nissan’s presence in some of the most competitive segments of the market, so here’s to another 20 years of Nissan in India.

Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line First Drive Review https://turbocharged.in/volkswagen-tiguan-r-line-first-drive-review/ https://turbocharged.in/volkswagen-tiguan-r-line-first-drive-review/#respond Fri, 09 May 2025 09:08:00 +0000 https://turbocharged.in/?p=14962 Volkswagen’s premium SUV, the Tiguan R-Line, aims to level-up with its generation change

I have some interesting memories with the Volkswagen Tiguan, having driven it extensively across the country. It’s also an SUV that’s always blended great driving dynamics to excellent comfort, while boasting the solid build quality Volkswagens are known for. Things have changed in a big way for the Tiguan this time though, with Volkswagen bringing in the new generation Tiguan in the sportier, R-Line trim. Interestingly, it comes in via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route, making it more expensive. It is worth the updates and the higher price tag? I spent a few days with the SUV to find out.

A big change is the new design language. We’ve always known the Tiguan to look boxy, but the Tiguan R-Line feels like a radical departure with its curvier lines, while also being longer and wider. While that makes sense, it is interesting to note that the wheelbase is identical to the previous generation Tiguan, and that this new Tiguan is also shorter in height. The Matrix LED headlamps are more rounded and have a thick slat housing the two-dimensional Volkswagen logo in between, while the DRLs stretch across the width, helping the face look contemporary. The bumper design is aggressive and gets lots of gloss black finishes, along with a wide chrome strip and a faux mesh with large air dams.

The 19-inch wheels look sporty, while the silhouette is very different from the previous generation Tiguan, thanks to the curvy design. There are two sharp creases on the sides, one on the front fender and the other towards the rear, which add character, along with the roof rails. Ground clearance is par for the course at 176mm. The Tiguan R-Line also runs Volkswagen’s IQ LED tail lamps that use a very distinctive design and are connected by an LED strip. Like the front, the rear bumper is finished in gloss black too but also gets some chrome. The overall design is appealing, though the curvier lines have the Tiguan look less hardcore.

Interiors are radically different and headlining it all is a 15-inch touchscreen – that’s larger than most laptops! The dashboard is more upright and has no physical controls, with everything having been moved to the touchscreen. The only physical controls you get are on the centre console, for the electronic parking brake, engine start-stop and rotor that can toggle between adjusting volume and switching driving modes. The dashboard design is very different from what we see usually, offering a youthful, sporty vibe, especially the left side, which is a near-vertical slab of gloss-black plastic and integrates LEDs for the ambient lighting. The lighting also extends into the door trims and there’s some very interesting patterns and colour combinations to choose from.

The steering wheel looks identical to the Virtus and Taigun’s but feels more premium and also gets an ‘R’ on its base. The large touchscreen helps in viewing information on the go, or when using navigation. The interface is simple which again helps, and the amount of information you can view on the screen is terrific. I still wish there were physical controls for air-conditioning though, as they’re a touch panel below the touchscreen and confusing to use on the go. Overall quality of plastics is good and the cabin offers the premium vibe you would expect at the price. You also get a panoramic sunroof, that helps in upping the premium quotient. The front seats in the Tiguan R-Line are a highlight too, for multiple reasons.

The post Tata Motors opens two EV-specific dealerships in Kochi, Kerala first appeared on Turbocharged.

]]>
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, today unveiled two EV-exclusive dealerships under the TATA.ev brand identity in Kochi, Kerala. These retail stores are centrally located in Edappally and Kalamassery and will sell only Tata’s EV offerings. Last December, Tata Motors had inaugurated its first Tata.ev EV-specific retail store in Gurugram, Haryana.

The carmaker chose Kerala as the first state to have Tata.ev EV-specific dealerships as it’s the leading market for EVs in the country with a market penetration of 5.6 percent. It is also fitting that Tata should open an EV-only dealership given that it is the leader in passenger EV sales by a huge margin and has the largest passenger EV vehicle portfolio in the country consisting of the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch.ev, Nexon.ev and Curvv.ev with more in the pipeline.

The TATA.ev Edappally store is the brand’s biggest EV store with an area of over 8,800 sq ft, allowing it to comfortably display more than 10 vehicles besides having ample parking space for customers and visitors. The store also has a dedicated 60 kW DC fast charger. In the coming months, the store will include a dedicated EV service facility with 17 bays (12 for service and five for the body shop). This workshop will be able to handle more than 800 vehicles per month

The TATA.ev Kalamassery store has 6,100 sq ft space which can easily showcase six vehicles with sufficient parking space for visitors. This store also has a 60 kW DC fast charger. The store will soon get a dedicated EV service centre with 11 mechanical bays and will be able to service 700 EVs in a month.

Tata Motors plans to inaugurate many more Tata.ev retail stores across the country besides opening five more EV-specific service centres in Kerala.

Kia now 1 million strong in India https://turbocharged.in/kia-now-1-million-strong-in-india/ https://turbocharged.in/kia-now-1-million-strong-in-india/#respond Thu, 08 Aug 2024 12:58:47 +0000 https://turbocharged.in/?p=10551 Having more than 588 touch points across India

The post Kia now 1 million strong in India first appeared on Turbocharged.

]]>
Kia India has reached a significant milestone, achieving 1 million unit sales in the domestic market within 59 months of its operations in the country. This achievement highlights Kia’s rapid growth since its entry into the Indian market in 2019, with the Seltos model playing a major role, contributing to nearly half of the company’s total sales. The Sonet and Carens models have also contributed significantly to the company’s success, accounting for 34% and 16% of sales.

Since its launch, Kia India has made a notable impact on the Indian automotive industry, introducing technology and design that have appealed to a wide range of customers. 42% of the company’s sales come from its top trims, challenging the notion that India is primarily a cost-sensitive market. Kia’s strategy has also encouraged the adoption of automatic and newer transmission technologies, with automatic transmissions making up 32% of their total sales, and the Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) introduced with the Sonet in 2020 contributing 15%.

Kia India’s current petrol-to-diesel sales ratio stands at 59% to 41%. Commenting on the milestone, Mr. Joonsu Cho, Chief Sales Officer of Kia India, acknowledged the challenges of the Indian market and the competition from more established players, emphasizing that the achievement reflects Kia’s commitment to meeting the needs of Indian customers. He noted that Kia’s focus on innovation is a driving force behind their global and domestic strategies, with plans to introduce more models in the Indian market later this year.

The company’s growth is reflected in its expanding sales figures, starting with 45,226 units sold in 2019 and reaching 2,55,000 units in 2023. In the first seven months of 2024, Kia has sold nearly 1.5 lakh units domestically, indicating strong momentum ahead of the festive season. Kia India’s presence has expanded across the country, with a network of 588 touchpoints in 256 cities.

In addition to its domestic achievements, Kia India plays a significant role in exports, having dispatched over 2.6 lakh units to more than 100 markets globally. The company’s cumulative sales, including exports, are approaching 1.3 million units.

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra hypercar revealed https://turbocharged.in/xiaomi-su7-ultra-hypercar-revealed/ https://turbocharged.in/xiaomi-su7-ultra-hypercar-revealed/#respond Tue, 23 Jul 2024 12:57:28 +0000 https://turbocharged.in/?p=10295 The company has already planned to take the pre-production iteration of the hypercar around the Nurburgring in October this year

The post Xiaomi SU7 Ultra hypercar revealed first appeared on Turbocharged.

]]>
Xiaomi has recently unveiled the most powerful iteration of its electric sedan SU7, the SU7 Ultra. The powertrain of the all-electric Xiaomi SU7 Ultra hypercar consists of two V8s and one V6s. Xiaomi has decided to call their electric motors V8s and V6s. A single V8s motor, the bigger one, is capable of cranking out 578PS and 635Nm of torque. The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra produces a combined power output of 1,548PS. With power figures being higher than the Bugatti Chiron, the SU7 Ultra can run 0-100kmph in 1.97 seconds and hit the 320kmph mark in 5.96 seconds. Top speed limited to 350 kmph. Xiaomi also mentions a braking distance of 25 meters from 100kmph to a complete stop.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is considerably bigger than the SU7 Max, flaunting more aerodynamic panels and a huge spoiler. The Xiaomi hypercar weighs in at 1,900 kg. That isn’t a feather-light figure. Even so, it is lighter than competitors like the Tesla Model S Plaid and Porsche Taycan Turbo GT which it aims to topple. Xiaomi is also gearing up to take the SU7 Ultra to the Nürburgring. The Chinese mammoth aims for the SU7 Ultra to be the fastest 4-door car around the Green Hell. The current EV record holder is the Volkswagen ID.R. As for 4-door electric cars, the Porsche Taycan is the current crown-bearer. Beating the legendary German carmaker wouldn’t be an easy task for Xiaomi.

Chinese EV manufacturer BYD has launched 2 new trims for its Atto 3 electric SUV which was earlier available only in the loaded model. With the new variants, the BYD Atto 3 is available in 3 trims namely: Dynamic, Premium, and Superior. They have also reduced the prices by ₹ 9 lakh with the lowest Dynamic trim starting at ₹ 24.99 lakh, Premium at ₹ 29.85 lakh, and Superior at ₹ 33.99 lakh. Along with the new trim levels, BYD has also launched a new Cosmos Black Colour for the electric SUV.

The new base variant brings forth major changes as it gets a smaller 49.92kWh battery with an ARAI-claimed range of 468km. The premium and the Superior variants get the same 60.48 kWh battery that the Atto 3 originally came with and an ARAI-claimed range of 521km.

All three variants continue to be powered by a single electric motor attached to the front axle that produces 204PS and 310Nm of torque.

With the use of a DC fast-charger, the BYD Atto 3’s battery pack can be charged from 0 percent to 80 percent within 50 minutes and when using an AC charger, it will take 8 hours to fully charge the smaller battery and 10 hours for the larger one.

The entry-level variants lose out on features available in the Superior variant. The Premium variant does not get the ADAS suite and the adaptive LED headlamps while, the Dynamic variant even misses out on a powered tailgate, an 8-speaker sound system and multi-colour ambient lighting, and it rides on smaller 17-inch wheels.

All the variants will continue to feature the 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 5-inch digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, automatic climate control and powered front seats. Safety features include a 360-degree camera, seven airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability programme and TPMS.

The BYD Atto 3, with the revised pricing now competes with the MG ZS EV which is priced in the range of ₹ 18.98 lakh–₹ 25.44 lakh, ex-showroom. Whether the revised pricing and new variants will boost the sales of the Chinese EV manufacturer in India remains to be seen.

The post Production of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in India first appeared on Turbocharged.

On 24th May 2024, Land Rover announced their new plans for the production of Range Rover & Range Rover Sport.

Range Rover is ‘Muscular, dynamic, modern and sophisticated’ in its terms. After the UK, India will be the first country to manufacture Range Rover and Range Rover Sport which will join the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport, and the Jaguar F-Pace which are already locally manufactured at the JLR’s factory, and Tata Motors factory at Pune. That is great news, as the prices of both SUVs will go down by 18 percent and 22 percent, making them more affordable for Indian customers and also achieving the ‘Made in India’ revolution.

Land Rover has been assembling cars in India for a long time, now it is starting the production of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in India. This will eventually boost sales as there will be a price drop in both models.

The detailed prices of the cars are not out yet but we have some figures as the 3.0- litre six-cylinder diesel engine producing 345hp and 700Nm has a price reduction of Rs 44 lakh which sums up to Rs 2.36 crore (ex-showroom), whereas the 3.0 Litre six-cylinder petrol engine which produces 392PS and 550Nm is reduced by Rs 56 lakh, now the price is Rs 2.60 crore(ex-showroom). Deliveries for the locally manufactured Range Rover will commence on May 24th, 2024.

The price of the locally assembled Range Rover Sport has been reduced by Rs 29 lakh and is now priced at Rs 1.40 crore (ex-showroom) for both the petrol and diesel 3.0 Litre SE Dynamic variants. The petrol variant puts 392PS and 550Nm while the diesel churns out 345PS and 700Nm. The 4.4-litre V8 SV edition will continue to be an import. The deliveries for the Range Rover Sport will commence on August 16th, 2024.

Around the coastal town of Alibaug, Maharashtra, Land Rover has also designed a Range Rover House which is a modern luxury experience displaying the first Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models to roll out of the Pune factory. These models will now be produced in India exclusively for the Indian market.

Land Rover has shared that a fully electric Range Rover will arrive at the end of 2024 and a fully electric Range Rover Sport by 2025.
