The wait is over! BMW India has officially launched the next generation of their iconic 5 Series, arriving in the long-wheelbase (LWB) variant. This highly anticipated update takes aim directly at the upcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB, expected later this year.

While retaining the classic silhouette that defines the 5 Series range, this new generation gets a significant size increase, earning its LWB designation (unlike the recently launched Gran Limousine 3 Series).The 5 series is packed with a 2.0-litre twin-turbo petrol engine mated to a 48V electric motor capable of doing 0-100 in just 6.5 seconds. It also gets 18-inch alloy wheels with high profile tyres with an optional upgrade to 19-inch alloys.The exterior design stays true to BMW heritage with a few key modern touches.

A revised kidney grille, sharper bumpers, and a fresh multi-spoke alloy wheel design add a touch of contemporary flair. One can’t miss the signature BMW wrap-around taillights, now sporting a cleaner and more streamlined full-LED design compared to the previous generation.It is also equipped with a 14-inch infotainment system and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster. The cabin, reminiscent of the iX, features a minimalistic layout dominated by a massive one-piece curved screen. While minimalism reigns supreme, the center console packs a punch with the iDrive dial, volume controls, drive mode selector, and gear selector.

The extended wheelbase translates to a significant advantage in rear-seat legroom and headroom. While the E-Class LWB offers adjustable rear seating, the 5 Series LWB offers a fixed second row. However, expect optional seatback entertainment screens to be available at launch.Luxury features abound, including multi-zone climate control, Level 2 advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), a top-tier 18-speaker Bowers and Wilkins sound system, USB-C charging ports, wireless phone charging, and ventilated power-adjustable front seats.All-wheel drive (xDrive) is likely reserved for the upcoming M5 expected in 2025.

The new 5 Series LWB will compete not only with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB and Audi A6 but also with popular SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X3, and Audi Q5.
