• Mahindra XUV300 Turbo-petrol Autoshift First Drive Review

The XUV300's energetic turbo-petrol motor now gets the convenience of an auto box

We’ve always liked the Mahindra XUV300 petrol for its punchy 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and it now gets a dollop of convenience too. How? Mahindra has just paired the motor to its AutoSHIFT gearbox, which is an automated manual transmission. But does the convenience comes at the cost of driver engagement in what has been a fun to drive compact SUV? We spent a couple of days behind its wheel to find out. The six-speed automated manual has a unique plus type shift pattern where you push the lever to the left for drive modes, right for neutral, up and down for manual shifts and a right and down tap for reverse. Though relatively simple, the unconventional shift pattern takes getting used to.

Like most AMTs the gearbox feels a little lazy and you need to measure your throttle inputs to change gears smoothly. Gearshifts are pretty seamless once you know how to do it right. The XUV300 also gets a creep function that makes driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic more convenient. When it comes to hustling, the enthusiastic turbo-petrol is held back a bit by the gearbox though. This is a little disappointing given the 1.2-litre three pot motor’s outputs of 110PS and 200Nm. Bury the throttle and you have to wait as the gearbox figures out the right gear before letting the engine up build speeds quickly. On inclines, floor the throttle and the AMT takes a while before dropping a cog, causing the vehicle to lose momentum, so in terms of gearbox logic, there is scope for improvement. 

The XUV 300 now gets Mahindra’s BlueSense Plus connected car technology, offered in the top W8 (O) variant. It works both on iOS and Android platforms both and offers functionality like geo-fencing and information like tyre pressures, fuel level and car location. You can also turn headlights on/off or blow the horn remotely but cannot turn the engine ON or OFF. The app is easy to use but could offer a lot more in terms of remote usability like engine start-stop or AC pre-cooling. Nothing much has changed visually though and overall the XUV300 looks the same inside-out. Which in a way is good thing as the XUV300 is smart-looking and well-proportioned while the interiors look premium and well-appointed. With prices starting at Rs 11.12 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi, the turbo-petrol AutoSHIFT variant is quite convenient thus but has stolen some of the turbocharged petrol version’s thunder.
