A three-pointed star in the garage is always good, so when Mercedes-Benz India called up asking if I’d like to have the EQS 580 sedan for a few days, the offer was too tempting to resist. It’s a luxury EV I’ve driven extensively in the past and one that’s always left a mark with its comfort and luxury quotient. Then there’s the fact with its claimed range of 857km per charge – which results in around 600km or more per charge in the real world – the EQS 580 sedan is a brilliant EV to be driving around, as you don’t need to charge it very often.

I’ve also got to add here that the daughter, who’s now nine years old, seems to have a particular liking for Mercedes-Benz cars as you would have just read in my report of the EQB 350. Her joy knew no bounds when the EQS 580 sedan came home, and she instantly recollected playing games like Tetris on its passenger screen the last time I had it, besides also remembering how large the car’s main infotainment screen was! Got to admit, kids these days are more excited about the technology in cars than the cars themselves, which is an interesting change from our times where I remembered cars for their design more than anything else as a kid!
And with its flowing lines the EQS 580 is very distinctive looking too. That said, it’s the interiors of the sedan that impress even more, and even have a sense of occasion to say so. I’ve always liked the ambient lighting in the car on the same note, which coupled with the cabin layout lends the EQS 580’s insides a very futuristic vibe, even two years after its launch. The EQS 580’s seats help in adding to the car’s likeable feel with their plush feel and of course, the massage function.

Speaking of which, it’s the rear bench that I’ve almost never experienced, as I’m usually handling driving duties. I’ve always liked driving the EQS 580 though, as it feels surprisingly easy to drive in traffic despite its size. You get an excellent view of your surroundings from behind the wheel and the steering feels light at slow speeds, making it a cinch to maneuver or park. And over the 10-odd days that I had the car I only needed to charge it once, as I was merely commuting in it, besides a couple of short drives. But the next time I get the EQS again, I’m going to make sure I get driven around in it, and put its brilliant back seat to good use!
