If you’re someone who digs black cars too, the Maruti Suzuki Phantom Blaq Edition is the latest name that should be on your radar! It’s 10 years now since Maruti Suzuki launched its Nexa chain of dealerships, with the S-Cross being the first model to go on sale from the premium retail channel, back in 2015. And as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations, the car maker has launched a blacked-out version of its midsize premium SUV, the Grand Vitara, dubbed the Phantom Blaq Edition. As is the norm with black versions of existing models, changes to the Grand Vitara are cosmetic only, and the Phantom Blaq edition will be offered only in the top, Alpha+ strong hybrid variant. You thus get a full matte black treatment as far as the exterior paint job is concerned, along with blacked-out 17-inch wheels and also a blacked-out grille, though the Suzuki logo adorning it is still finished in chrome.
Interiors remain unchanged, as the Alpha+ trim uses a black theme inside already, along with champagne gold highlights in several places. Equipment levels remain unchanged too meaning you get the same 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen that stands on the dashboard, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a Clarion audio system. Features also include a panoramic sunroof – with one of the largest openings – as also a 360-degree camera, head-up display, wireless charging pad and more. Powering the Grand Vitara’s strong hybrid version which the Phantom Blaq edition is based on, is a strong hybrid powertrain that uses a 0.76kWh battery pack and electric motor paired to a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. Peak outputs stand at 116PS and 122Nm, while ARAI-certified fuel efficiency is the highest for any SUV in India, at a staggering 27.97 kmpl.
Prices are yet to be announced, but safe to assume the Phantom Blaq edition will command a very small premium over the Alpha Plus (O) Intelligent Hybrid e-CVT Dual Tone variant which is priced at ₹20.68 lakh ex-showroom.
