The deadline for installing High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before April 2019 in Maharashtra has officially ended on 31st December 2025, and the authorities will not be extending it further. As of now, over 27 lakh vehicles in the state are without the mandatory plates, and RTOs are doubling down on enforcement of fines. Here’s what you should know.

No more extension – what does this mean?

It means that if your vehicle does not have the HSRP, it can be fined on the spot, just the way Challan works. Fines start at ₹1,000 and may extend to ₹10,000 on subsequent offences. The enforcement may also extend to blocking of RTO services such as registration renewals, modification to loan agreements, ownership transfers or fitness certification until HSRP has been affixed.

What if I’ve registered for HSRP but the installation slot is scheduled for later?

If you’ve already booked your HSRP before 31st December 2025, you’re good to go. As long as you have your booking confirmation receipt downloaded from your state’s respective HSRP booking site and your slot is yet to come, you will not be liable to any fine.

What if I have a vehicle registered after April 2019?

You’re good. You already have the HSRP by default.

What if I have neither affixed nor registered for HSRP?

Fine. As in, penalties. You can be fined anywhere between ₹1,000 to ₹10,000, depending on your vehicle and whether you’ve been fined previously for the same offence.

What do I need for booking a slot?

You need to have your insurance, valid PUC, and the registration details of your vehicle (chassis number, engine number, registration number, and date given on your vehicle registration certificate).

How to book a slot for HSRP installation?

Search for “-your state- HSRP booking” online and follow the steps as mentioned on your state’s official HSRP booking website.

Does this affect my insurance?

It might. Different insurers have different policies, so it is best that you immediately talk to your insurer about not having an HSRP and whether it voids your insurance.

Bottom line – if you still haven’t registered for the HSRP, we suggest you get it done immediately. This way you’ll avoid breaking the law, or practically, the hassle of being pulled over and fined.
