Discussing Lamborghini’s future strategies for India with Sharad Agarwal, Head, Lamborghini India

The Urus S sits between the Urus and Urus Performante. What kind of customers are you targeting with this model?

In 2017 we launched the Urus and the original formula for this SUV was to combine three different souls which are two different worlds apart. It was the first time we brought everyday driving versatility to a Lamborghini, and also the first time we brought the performance and the driving dynamics of a sportscar to the SUV segment. We focused on a lot of spirit of adventure to make people enjoy and experience the Urus on any kind of road and terrain. The Urus created a completely new segment in the luxury space called the super- SUV. At Lamborghini we are always challenging ourselves, how do we continuously improve the performance and the experience of our models? Now, with the Urus, we have two different new derivatives in the Urus family. We have the Urus S and the Urus Performante. While the Urus S has evolved to bring everyday versatility, lifestyle and luxury and to have an ultimate Lamborghini super-SUV to our customers. On the other hand, we have the Urus Performante where we have raised the bar in terms of performance and fun-to-drive factor. So the Urus Performante is sportier and designed to offer performance like that of a true super sports car.

The Urus continues its bull run in the super-SUV segment – what’s next, a more powerful Urus with a hybrid powertrain?

Yes. We have already announced that we are taking a step towards electrification. As a first step, we are going to hybridise our entire model range. We recently unveiled the first Lamborghini hybrid, the Revuelto and next year we are also going to introduce the hybrid Urus. And then this will be followed by a third model, a new model, which
will replace the current Huracan.

Is there any chance a more powerful version of the Urus may also show up?

At this point, I can only say that at Lamborghini we know that we make dream cars for our customers so the performance from our new model will always be better than the predecessor.

The Huracan Sterrato has been received very well, do you see it as the next big thing in the supercar arena for markets like India?

Yes, the Sterrato is a very brave and unexpected concept which Lamborghini brought to life. It is the first all-round super sports car, basically an all-terrain super sports car. We showcased this car last year in December to our select media and customers and we are very excited with the kind of response we’ve already got for the Sterrato in the country. So we are looking forward to seeing the car on the Indian roads.

Lamborghini India has been quite active on the customer engagement front with events including track days. What’s on the agenda this year?

2023 is a very special year because this year we are also celebrating 60 years of our company, Automobili Lamborghini. It’s time for us to celebrate, and to do that we are also curating some new exciting experiences for our customers. We already had a unique experience at a dirt track near Bengaluru with the Urus Performante which was very unique for our customers. And during the year we are also going to do Lamborghini Zero, which is going to be a three-night, four-day tour on some of the best roads in the country with Lamborghini owners. We’re doing a Lamborghini Bull Run where we are also promoting mental health along with driving on some of the nice roads in the country. And then there are a lot more experiences which we have also planned for our customers because this is a very special year for us to celebrate the 60th anniversary.

The Revuelto is a truly revolutionary product. What are your thoughts on the car?

It’s a very exciting time for us because we are stepping into the new era and we are always saying that we will remain true to our DNA and the performance of a new model will always be better than its predecessor’s. The Aventador was already an iconic car and when you look at Revuelto, the way we introduced the first hybrid in Lamborghini, it is definitely going to redefine the technology, the experience and the emotions that a customer gets from a Lamborghini. So, it is a car which is true to our DNA.

How has the response from Aventador owners in India been to the Revuelto? When do you plan to launch it here?

The response has been phenomenal. We’re encouraged because we have an order bank which is already running into many months. Like we always try when we launch a new model globally, we always work hard towards bringing the new model faster to the Indian market. So yes, we are going to launch the new Revuelto this year and you’ll hear from us when we are able to do that.

Given the record sales last year, has India moved up the ranks for Lamborghini in terms of importance?

India was always an important market for us because we always believe that India has a huge opportunity to grow and that is why in 2012 we set up a subsidiary in India with a team dedicated to the market. So we do know that India has a huge potential to grow and the current growth or the current scenario is not changing that status. Yes, we are growing in terms of our business, our volume, the experiences, which we are creating for our customers and we’re growing consistently. So that is our focus.

Lastly, given a choice, what would your daily driver be in Mumbai – the Urus or the Huracan Sterrato?

I will always go for a sports car. I love the performance and emotions which you get with a sports car. That’s my first love.
