Gensol EV says the certificate shows that its electric car is getting close to being put into production and entering the Indian automotive market. The car will be manufactured in the company’s plant in Chakan, Pune and have an annual production capacity of 30,000 units.

The upcoming two-seater electric car as teased on Gensol EV’s website has a claimed range of 200km and a top speed of 80kmph. The interior also seems to feature touchscreen infotainment and instrument consoles, moonroof and driver assistance technology, with what the company calls AI-driven cloud analytics. More details about the car are expected to be revealed soon. It will go up against the likes of MG Comet and Tata Tiago EV.

The foundation of the Human x Car x Home is the HyperOS, which features system-level cross-device connectivity to integrate over 200 product categories comprising 600 million global devices covering 95 percent of user scenarios, as claimed by Xiaomi.

The SU7 is Xiaomi’s first electric vehicle and has three variants; the base, the Pro and the Max. The SU7 Max was showcased at the MWC. It has a dual-motor AWD setup, with a total output of 663PS. Xiaomi claims the top speed of the SU7 Max is 265kmph with a 0 to 100kmph time of 2.78 seconds and a range of 800km.

During the MWC event, Xiaomi showcased devices such as the 12S Ultra which is the company’s first phone that has been jointly developed with Leica. Also on display was the recently launched Xiaomi 14 series, which features Leica’s Summilux optical lenses.

The CyberDog 2 was presented too, a quadruped robot that has 19 sensors for functions like vision, touch and hearing. Xiaomi claims the robot is designed to resemble a real dog in its movement, appearance and interactions. The technology behind the robot is open-source and can be customised by developers to suit their needs.

At the event, Xiaomi reiterated its vow to reach carbon neutrality by 2040, which was declared in its inaugural climate action white paper during the COP28 conference. The company claims that its various initiatives and adoption of a circular economy which has a goal of recycling 38,000 tonnes of electronic waste from 2022 to 2026 will help in bridging technology and environmental sustainability.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Mr M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr T. R. B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries Tamil Nadu, Mr V. Arun Roy IAS, Industries Secretary, Member of Parliament from the Thoothukudi constituency and MLAs from the Tamil Nadu government along with VinFast’s leadership team. 

VinFast’s facility will be spread over 400 acres, and have an investment of USD 500 million (Rs 4,145 crore) over 5 years and create jobs for 3,000 to 3,500 people. The projected annual output of the facility is 1.50 lakh vehicles. The EV maker has plans to localise the production of its cars and also establish a dealership network across the country. 

VinFast is the automotive arm of Vingroup and was established in 2017. The EV maker has a manufacturing facility in Hai Phong, Vietnam that has up to 90 percent automation. The Tamil Nadu facility will join the existing plant in Vietnam and the ones in Indonesia and USA which are under construction, to enhance the company’s global reach.

During the event, Mr Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast India stated that this ceremony is a significant stride towards sustainable and green mobility in India. The facility fulfils VinFast’s commitment to create jobs and green transportation, in the process solidifying the company’s position as a major player in the EV industry.

Dr T. R. B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries Tamil Nadu commented that VinFast’s entry into India reaffirms the state’s progressive industrial policies and its role as a global automotive innovation and manufacturing hub. He added that the state will match VinFast’s growth plans in India and that it is committed to make zero-emission mobility widely accessible.

VinFast’s line-up of EVs includes cars like the VF6, VF7, VF8 and VF9. This facility in Tamil Nadu will help in the company’s expansion in India. Let us see which cars make their way to our country.

In terms of exterior, the Evoque facelift gets two new colours, called Corinthian Bronze and Tribeca Blue. It also gets a redesigned grille, LED headlamps and DRLs, diamond-cut wheels and red brake callipers.

For the interior, the Evoque has perforated leather seats with heating and cooling functions, Moonlight Chrome detailing on the steering wheel, console trim and air vents as well. This is complemented by a new Shadow Grey Ash Veneer. 

The Evoque features a new 11.4-inch curved Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment system. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and has over-the-air software update support. The car also has wireless phone charging. There is an air purifier on board, which has PM2.5 filtration and CO2 management and monitoring systems. The Evoque also has 3D Surround View and ClearSight Ground View systems which give the driver a 360-degree view around the car and also a view under the bonnet to help navigate in broken roads or off-road conditions.

As mentioned earlier, the Evoque has two powertrain options – a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 250.2PS and 365Nm and a 2.0-litre diesel mild hybrid engine delivering 204.4PS and 430Nm. Both powertrains are equipped with a 48V lithium-ion battery connected to a Belt integrated Starter Generator (BiSG) to save fuel in start-stop driving conditions. The power is put down via a 9-speed automatic gearbox.

The Evoque also gets Terrain Response 2, which allows the driver to adjust the SUV’s settings according to the driving conditions. You can choose between Eco, Comfort, Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Dynamic and Automatic modes. The modes change the settings of the engine, transmission, AWD system, suspension and stability control systems depending on the conditions.

The Evoque goes up against the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and the Volvo XC60.

At this event, Amara Raja President, Mr Vijayanand Samudrala announced that the company shall have a giga factory complex of three to four individual factories manufacturing battery cells in two, NMC and LFP chemistries and two formats, cylindrical and prismatic. The company is aiming for 16GWh of lithium-ion battery cell capacity and up to 5GWh of battery pack assembly capacity. The first phase of the giga factory will be operational by the end of 2025 in the Mahbubnagar district of Telangana.

Amara Raja will also set up an R&D facility called E Positive Energy Lab in Hyderabad, which will have 3,00,000sqft of built-up area and have a significant portion of the area dedicated to collaborating with customers, suppliers and others. Mr Samudrala referred to his giga factory visits across Europe, China, South Korea and other countries to showcase the importance of an ecosystem rather than just a standalone manufacturing facility. Mr Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Industries & Commerce (I&C) and IT, Govt. of Telangana was the keynote speaker at the summit. He referred to the Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has a target of 150GWh ACC manufacturing capacity by 2030. Mr Ranjan expressed his optimism about meeting the targets and said India might even exceed it.

The Fronx has been essential in increasing Maruti Suzuki’s SUV segment share to 19.7 percent in CY2023 from 10.4 percent a year prior. The Fronx’s automatic variants have contributed to 24 percent of the car’s total sales. The car’s 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine has witnessed considerable demand. Setting sights out of India as well, the carmaker has also started exports of the Fronx, with over 9,000 units exported to markets in Latin America, the Middle East, and South-East Asia.

The Fronx has three powertrain options in the form of a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine which can also be optioned with a factory-fitted CNG kit and the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The 1.2-litre engine can be paired with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT while the CNG kit only gets the 5-speed manual. The turbocharged engine gets the option of a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

The Fronx has features like a heads-up display with turn-by-turn navigation, a 360-degree camera, a wireless smartphone charger and a 9-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The SUV’s prices start from Rs 7.47 lakh and go up to Rs 12.98 lakh, ex-showroom.

The initiative offers three types of experiences in the form of – Weekenders, Expeditions and the 4×4 Masters. The first two are curated drives in a short and long time format respectively while the 4×4 Masters comprises an offroad championship. It will be conducted in two phases with qualifiers organised in eight cities ending with a grand finale. The 4×4 Masters is reserved only for Jimny owners. Participants will have to bring their own vehicles to the events.

The inaugural drive of Rock N’ Road started on January 23 from Chandigarh with 14 Jimny SUVs heading towards Kaza, covering 539km in six days. The convoy will pass through Spiti Valley too. Future drives are announced on the dedicated website.

The Dakar Rally sees riders race in two classes. First is the RallyGP class, wherein the riders have to be registered with the FIM championship committee. The Rally 2 class is open to those who are not registered as RallyGP riders.

Harith Noah has previously finished 20th at the 2021 Dakar Rally and was the first Indian to achieve this. Noah’s 2024 campaign started off slow, as he finished 29th in the prologue. But as the rally progressed, he found pace and began to climb up the ranks consistently. By stage six, Noah had achieved P13. 

Noah even became the first Indian to win a stage. He finished first in the Rally 2 class in the seventh stage despite battling with sickness. He kept up his speed and even managed to finish fifth overall in stage 10! Noah has showcased a great comeback ride this season, significantly improving on his previous best of top 20 finish of 2021 and getting his redemption over the spinal injury caused by a crash at Dakar last year.
