Maruti Suzuki announces India as the global hub for its first electric car the e Vitara; soon to be launched in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging off the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara from the production line at Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant.

“Companies like Maruti Suzuki have become brand ambassadors of Make in India.” An honour bestowed on Maruti Suzuki by our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who graced the major event held at the Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG) plant in Hansalpur, Gujarat. Maruti Suzuki India limited (MSIL) had invited PM Modi to flag off its first Battery Electric vehicle or BEV, the e Vitara, from this very plant. However, the proud moment for us Indians was when Suzuki announced the start of production of the e Vitara in India for the global market, making Gujarat the hub for its first all-electric model. First showcased at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show, the e Vitara is now being produced at SMG, and MSIL plans to export it to over 100 countries from India. On the other hand, MSIL is also examining the domestic demand for EVs, and based on their observations, the company plans to launch the e Vitara in India in the near future.

In another significant move, MSIL announced that its joint venture with Japanese giants Toshiba and Denso, called Toshiba Denso Suzuki Gujarat (TDSG), part of SMG, has achieved electrode-level localisation of Lithium-ion Battery Cell, making it the first company in India to do so. This move could result in substantial cost savings compared to current battery packs that are primarily imported from China.

Along with the e Vitara and Battery Cell production, MSIL also announced that it will invest ₹70,000 crore in India over the next five to six years. Since 2012, MSIL has made an investment of ₹21,077 crore at SMG, which currently has an annual production capacity of 750,000 units. TDSG has also seen an investment of ₹4,267 crore and currently produces 18 million cells annually; however, TDSG plans to add another 12 million cells in the coming years. MSIL’s focus on local production and an investment of almost ₹1,00,000 crore in India demonstrates the company’s strong commitment to our nation.
