It is no secret that BMW has been working on giving the X2 which has been chugging along since 2017 a generational update. And now, that time has come with the 2024 X2 crossover breaking cover while also introducing an all-electric variant called the iX2.
The X2 was already labelled as a crossover before but in its second iteration, it’s gotten a more mature evolution, veering towards a coupe-like philosophy. This is evident thanks to the roofline that now seamlessly flows towards the rear. Elsewhere, like other modern BMWs, the X2 gets sportier looks thanks to an aggressive, illuminated BMW kidney grille, flared wheel arches and a chunky rear end.
The cabin is where the X2 takes a lot from the X1 and that’s not a bad thing as it is roomier than its predecessor and packs BMW’s Curved Display, powered by BMW’s iDrive9 OS. Other key highlights include a head-up display and connected car tech. There’s Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as ADAS.
Under the hood there are plenty of options for the new X2. It starts with the sDrive20i 170PS 1.5-litre petrol motor, followed by the sDrive18d 150PS 2.0-litre diesel option. The range-topper is the M35i xDrive setup comprising a 317PS 2.0-litre petrol motor with an xDrive all-wheel drive system. All three engines are paired to a 7-speed DCT.
Heading into the EV side of things, aside from minor cosmetic changes in the iX2, the main differentiator is the powertrain. A dual-electric motor setup delivers a combined 313PS, helping it reach 0-100kmph in 5.6 seconds and an 180kmph top speed. Juiced by a 64.8 kWh battery pack, the electric crossover can go up to WLTP-claimed range of 449km on a single charge.
While the X2 will be sold in markets abroad, it is unlikely to make it to India anytime soon as we already have the X1 as an entry-level model and there’s not a lot to give the X2 its own identity.
